This week: two very different fics from the same reclist!

Burn the Streets, Burn the Cars by anthrop
Danny Phantom x ParaNorman (2012)
General Audiences | Gen
Danny Fenton, Norman Babcock
Body Horror
4,923 words | One-shot
The boy at the door has a ghost under his skin. It’s a close fit, but green light still seeps out. It paints him smeary shades of radioactive green. Under the smoky light you’re fairly certain he’s a teenager with dark hair, a couple years older than you. Beyond that, it’s hard to make out details. When he looks at you, his eyes flare like glow-in-the-dark stars.

tragedy by Verse
Ace Attorney
Teen And Up Audiences | Gen
Phoenix Wright
Psychological Horror, Metafiction, POV Second Person
498 words | One-shot
And there is a god in this world, but it is neither merciful nor just. There is a god, and it's watching through your eyes.

As someone who has been avoiding a lot of the trailers and promo information for the new Mario movie, I am very scared and concerned about the stuff that has managed to slip past my blocked tags anyway. I've been seeing glimpses and screenshots of, like, the Drill and Cloud and Frog powerups here, Wart and Honey Queen in the voice cast there, and Rosalina and Bowser Junior, and Tostarina and the T. Rex from the Wooded Kingdom with Baby Mario and Luigi and Yoshi to boot and, like. What the heck is happening in that movie, honestly!

The first movie was definitely a keys-jingling-in-front-of-your-face we'll make you point at the background and go, "Hey, I know that! Hey, I know that! Hey, I know that!" kind of experience, but what I've seen so far makes it seem like they're cranking it up to 11. And since I've been avoiding the trailers, I don't know if there's supposed to be some kind of proper emotional/thematic throughline or not. Or if this is just keys jangling in front of something simple again. And that's not even getting into the fact that the first movie was 90 minutes flat; how long is this movie going to be? Are they gonna fit all that into 90 minutes again? If they do I'm genuinely going to lose my mind.

There's also a Tumblr post I saw the other day that pointed out that as the Mario movies are established to be mainstay, everyone's gonna realize how there aren't any black people in there at all, and. Christ alive. They're gonna introduce Daisy in Movie #3, and she's gonna be pasty white and I'm going to sink to the ground in embarrassment for all the years I spent being fannish about this series. Not to mention they'll totally #Girlboss her in probably the exact same way they did Peach. Or maybe they'll damsel her, like they're seemingly doing to Rosalina. It will be a total shit show, I know it.

Anyway, I won't be able to watch the movie until like the week after it comes out so godspeed to me ig 🙃

Drift Away until It's Over

Every once in a while I think about the barbershop arrangement of "It's Over Isn't It" that me and some friends learned last year. Partially because that arrangement was awesome and people loved hearing it and it's my favorite experience with barbershop to date, but also because this arrangement used as its intro an excerpt from "Drift Away" —

Happily wondering night after night
Is this how it works? Am I doing it right?
Happy to listen, happy to stay
Happily watching her drift away

— and that's an incredibly fascinating recontexualization of both songs, isn't it? I think so, at least! I wish I had the brainpower to delve into that, though. It could be a fun little meta post!

(Edit: I found a video of this arrangement being performed!)

Tonight I used my Paid Journal Privileges and did a site search for recent posts mentioning Tumblr, found the ones from Tumblr folks obviously trying out the site for the first time, and commented on the posts to direct them to the newcomers comm OTL It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, especially 'cause I figured out a script, hehehe

...I did do it all on my phone, though. Maybe next time I'll actually take the extra few moments to turn my laptop on instead of Doing That.

Oh! Also: a haiku!

Good things can go bad
Yes, even those good things, too
But we carry on!

Block Party

First, a haiku:

Block by smiling block
we build a community
resulting in joy

Second, the block party in question was a mini one hosted by a local voice/piano lesson studio, and they had little 15-minute demo lessons you could sign up for! I did one for voice, and we talked about that break between the chest and head voice (I think there's a term for that, but idr what it's called). We did a couple of voice exercises and I don't wanna forget them so I'm gonna quickly write them down here, lol.

Voice exercises for me~
wee-wee-wee-wee-wee (54321) [<- the EE is supposed to sound obnoxious]
ah-(oh)-ooh (1 -> 8) [<- the OH is implied; if you do it the break goes away 🙂]
*sing through puffed cheeks*-ee-eh-ah [don't blow out the candle while you do this]

This week: a really funny and delightful Sonic fic in which Shadow's allowed to have a sense of humor, and a beautiful Hermitcraft fic that nails the character voices so good you'll hear them speaking the dialogue in your head. Seriously, both of these fics are most likely going on my favorite of the year list, they’re so good.

Five days before the world ends, Cleo is redrafting the outer parapets with graphite staining her fingers into an unflattering shade of grey, and Joe is reading the Odyssey aloud.
Four days after the world ends, Cleo wakes up.

Also, as a bonus: A really really cool found poem made entirely with dialogue from the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword!

...And a work on AO3 titled A Complete Guide to ‘Limited HTML' on AO3, which just saved my butt like an hour ago, lmao

I wrote a poem!

Don't get excited; it's a haiku XD

A fic I'm reading that finished today had a poetry prompt of the author's own devising at the bottom so I gave it a spin. Even though I literally haven't written a poem since middle school ^^;

Regardless, the prompt was "Lost in translation":

Though those foreign words
in your tongue won't be the same,
you might as well try

Anyway you could also write a poem with this prompt right now, if you want. Or read the fic. It's a very very good Hermitcraft fic; the character voices are spot on.

Happy Saturday!

I'm going to be doing a little maintenance today. It will likely cause a tiny interruption of service (specifically for www.dreamwidth.org) on the order of 2-3 minutes while some settings propagate. If you're on a journal page, that should still work throughout!

If it doesn't work, the rollback plan is pretty quick, I'm just toggling a setting on how traffic gets to the site. I'll update this post if something goes wrong, but don't anticipate any interruption to be longer than 10 minutes even in a rollback situation.

The new Fields of Mistria update...

With the new Fields of Mistria update comes the conclusion of the Mines storyline, which I completed last weekend.

I'm not impressed by the new bachelorette they introduced. On one hand, she seems like a Juniper 2.0 type of character, and we already have Juniper so why do we need another one? On the other hand, this game has introduced a new bachlorette who's somehow seemingly skinnier than the other ones. And that's an impressive bar to trip over, given the current options.

Little Rocket Lab is a game in which a girl named Morgan, who you play as, is trying to build a rocket with her aunt in the town she grew up in to continue the project her late mother had been so dedicated to. About two-thirds-ish through the game, Morgan decides, despite having a long, busy day and being told to rest, to sneak out of the house to the rocket silo to finish assembling the next phase of the rocket. Where she proceeds to accidentally start a giant fire that burns down a chunk of the silo and also almost kills her if not for Toasty (her robot companion) running in and saving her. Toasty literally dies doing this, by the way. It’s a whole thing.
